Allego x Panelle: An Interview with Kelsey McDonald

Allego x Panelle: An Interview with Kelsey McDonald

May 6, 2025

By:

Panelle Press Team

Kelsey McDonald, Senior Manager of Integrated Marketing at Allego, reflects on the power of perspective, confidence, and community.

From being the only woman on her management team to challenging quiet biases in the workplace, Kelsey’s career has been shaped by moments that called her to speak up, trust her instincts, and own her value.

She’s passionate about helping women recognize their voice as a strength - not something to hold back - and believes real change happens when we keep sharing, listening, and showing up for each other.

Her advice? Be bold, stay curious, and know that being a woman is your superpower.

Her mantra? Fresh air, real talk, and community over competition.

Read more from Kelsey here…

What has been your career defining moment as a woman in business?

When I first started out at Refract (later acquired by Allego), I was the only female on the OMT (operational management team). What was particularly special about this, is the fact that I rarely even considered this. My team were amazing, I felt empowered and supported, and over a shot course of time my confidence doubled. I've had some roles where the exact reverse has been true, so I knew how lucky I'd been to land the role at Refract and work with those team members.

Were there any obstacles you had to overcome as a woman in business?

Earlier in my career, I faced a few of the cliche situations like 'oh you should be notetaker because you have neat handwriting' and naturally picking up additional admin as I was 'the organised one' - I'm happy to report that this almost never happens now!

What advice would you give to a younger woman looking to join your industry?

Being female is your superpower. Hold your head high and tell yourself you have as much right to be present/heard as any of your male counterparts. Women are notorious for imposter syndrome so being confident in your own abilities is paramount.

If you could do one thing to accelerate the pace of change for gender equality, what would it be?

Mandatory education to call out the things that are innocently overlooked (like assuming the female will be notetaker because her handwriting is neat) - there is never any ill will or malice, it's just being more mindful.

What compelled you to attend a Panelle event?

I think it's important to share experiences as women in this line of work.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Learn to go with the flow and embrace change (it's constant in business), be adaptable, and be brave enough to offer your unique perspective, oftentimes it's a perspective others might not have thought of and the things that may seem obvious to you, are. not always obvious to others.

What’s your go-to advice for preventing burnout?

Fresh air. I swear by getting outdoors and walking. It helps me to organise my thoughts, make sense of the to-do list in my head and it makes me more productive.

Why do you think it’s important for women to help other women win?

Women are social creatures, we thrive when part of a community. The collective power of women supporting women is really something to be harnessed and protected.

Finally, please put the spotlight on another woman in business who either inspires you or has pulled out the seat for you.

Earlier in my career, I had a female line manager (Michele Gettins, now CMO at iamproperty). I was good at my job but I was quiet, shy, and reserved. She gave me a safe space to be heard, she coached me and brought me out of my shell, encouraging me to share my opinion even when I didn't think it mattered or wasn't relevant. I quickly learned that my input was valuable. I'm not surprised to see that she has gone on to do great things and is now in a CMO role for a £76mil revenue company with 650 employees. Her leadership, empathy, and most importantly- her feminine superpower, changed the course of my life
